As part of the efforts and commitment that the BMW Group San Luis Potosí Plant has to the environment, since 2022, it has been collecting its employees' uniforms to reuse their textile materials. The BMW Group promotes the circular economy and protects the environment by reusing resources used in all manufacturing processes, even those not directly related to vehicle production. In this sense, to reduce the impact generated by the fabric of the uniforms used by its 3,500 employees, BMW Group San Luis Potosí Plant promotes the project called "New life for your uniform", which promotes the reuse of up to 60% of the textiles of each garment. To make this initiative possible, BMW Group San Luis Potosí Plant partnered with Green Hug, a company focused on the creation of sustainable clothing and reforestation projects, for which both companies have collaborated on both types of initiatives, including the reforestation of trees in different areas of the state.
We identified an opportunity to reduce environmental impact through the reuse of our collaborators' uniforms. Hand in hand with Green Hug, launch manager of construction and environmental management projects at the BMW Group San Luis Potosí Plant. So far, we have managed to work with more than 3,000 pieces of uniforms that have been converted into products such as lunch boxes, tote Guatemala Mobile Number List bags, aprons, laptop holders, eco-bags, pencil cases, and toiletry bags. This figure is expected to grow exponentially according to the maturity of the project. New life for your uniform Jorge Lomelí, co-founder and director of Green Hug commented: On average, the production of a cotton polo shirt requires 2,700 liters of water and generates 8 kg of CO2 in its production, with an estimated life time of 1 to 2 years during use. of the garment, hence the importance of extending its life period.
To make this initiative possible, the process that the uniforms follow to be reused begins with their collection within the Plant; Subsequently, they are sent to Green Hug, where the selection of the pieces suitable for reuse is carried out. These uniforms go through a preparation process, the seams are removed and the pieces with which the new product will be created are cut. Afterwards, they are sewn again and the final details are added to move on to labeling and packaging. Currently, the products are part of the welcome kit for collaborators new to the company; It is planned that, in the future, these products will be a distinctive insignia for all employees of the BMW Group San Luis Potosí Plant. At the moment, the areas participating in this initiative are Logistics, Human Resources, Environmental, Communication, Purchasing and Finance. The products can also be purchased by the public who takes a tour of the Plant and, in this way, contribute to the success of this project.
